eBay buy Depop. Best Defense since the Seahawks Superbwol win.
eBay, oh eBay where for art thou
Is eBay having an identity crisis, or is this the most expensive “Gen Z camouflage” in history? The news that eBay is acquiring Depop from Etsy (at a $400M+ loss for Etsy, no less) feels like a glitch in the e-commerce simulation. On the surface, it’s just another acquisition. But if you look at the board, this feels like a massive, high-stakes defensive play against the Vinted US invasion.
I’m curious, and I want your takes on this, because the “common thread” in eBay’s recent shopping spree (TCGplayer, Goldin, Certilogo, Sneaker Con) is clear: They are niching down. They want to reward the “Enthusiast.” The guy or gal who knows the exact SKU of a 1998 holographic Charizard or the torque specs of a vintage Porsche. (these people exist)
But can you buy “cool”? Here is what I’m chewing on:
The “Dad’s Attic” Problem: To a Gen Z shopper, does eBay even occupy mindshare? Or is it just the place where their parents sold the old printer? Depop has the “scroll-ability” and the aesthetic “vibe.” eBay has the logistics and the “Authentication Guarantee.” Can the two actually co-exist, or will the Depop community revolt once the “eBay-ification” begins? Given their age, Depop and eBay feels like your Aunt and Uncle dancing at a wedding. Beautiful and nostalgic in theory but ….
The Etsy Retreat: Why is Etsy selling at a loss? Is a $750M share repurchase program really a sign of strength, or is it a “survival” tax to keep activist investors at bay? They’re choosing cash-on-hand over the future of social commerce.
The Vinted Juggernaut: I’m incredibly bullish on Vinted. Their “Zero Seller Fee” model is a direct attack on eBay’s legacy revenue. If Vinted is the “People’s Marketplace,” where does that leave the others? The Partnership Game: If Vinted is going for the throat in the US, who are their natural allies? Does a partnership with a logistics giant like Pitney Bowes or a social titan like TikTok make more sense for them than a traditional acquisition? In a world where many 3PLs are consciously uncoupling from Amazon, there may be headroom here.
The Collaboration Paradox: Where can collaboration exist in a winner-takes-all resale war? Could we see a world where eBay handles the “High-Value Authentication” for other platforms? Or are we just watching the slow-motion balkanization of the internet’s garage sale?
eBay is trying to buy its way into a generation that values “the find” over “the search.” But in a world of Vinted and “Zero Fees,” is a $1.2B acquisition a moat, or just a very expensive life jacket. Is eBay becoming a “Collection of Boutiques” because it can no longer be “The Everything Store”? I still love eBay. The infrastructure is improved. But infrastructure isn’t “culture.” And in 2026, culture is the only currency that doesn’t depreciate.
Are you betting on the Legacy King or the Lithuanian Disruptor?
