Amazon.com Holiday Season Numbers Breakdown

Some light Sunday reading for you. Amazon US holiday Stats are staggering – next year this will be even bigger – growth of Alexa and connected products will be significant. The move into own brand will make a big dent in aspirations of other IoT companies oropportunities for those unnamed partners that provide the product. Either way, the inevitable is happening. Google and Facebook will be close in tow, but these early adoption of a really trusted retailer, means Amazon can even fail at some products for now. But the AI research and gleaning these early launches will give Amazon sets them ahead of the competition. This will be a recurring them for the next 2-3 years and beyond. This will be industry and company agnostic.

The numbers - at a glance, full press release can be read here.

  1. On Cyber Monday 2016, Handmade at Amazon saw a 200 percent increase in sales versus Cyber Monday 2015.

  2. More than 72 percent of Amazon customers worldwide shopped using a mobile device this holiday. Shopping on the free Amazon mobile app grew by 56 percent this holiday, worldwide.

  3. There are now 45,000 robotics units working alongside Amazon associates in more than 20 fulfillment centers.

Underpinned by some extraordinary customer stories, reading beyond the obvious:

  1. The last Prime Now order delivered in time for the holiday was delivered at 11:59 p.m. on December 24, 2016 to a Prime member in Irvine, California. The order included a Heated Mattress Pad, NyQuil and Afrin Nasal Spray.

  2. The fastest Prime Now delivery on Christmas Eve took 13 minutes and was delivered at 9:05 p.m. to a Prime member in Redondo Beach, California. The order included a Tile Slim Item Finder and a Tile Mate Key Finder.

For me this next bit is significant as a sign of what is to come. This requires some thought.

Best Sellers - .com only (same in UK I’m reliably told)

  • All Categories: Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick, Fire tablet, Amazon Echo

A category I am following closely with a client is this, hence the self indulgent link.

  • Outdoors: LifeStraw Personal Water Filter, Etekcity 2-pack Portable Outdoor LED Camping Lantern with 6 AA Batteries (Black, Collapsible), Yeti Coolers Rambler

Amazon continue to use a 20 year old framework to continue to dominate in almost every single area of commerce. Their entry into B2B last year is not for no good reason. While it is a key concept now, in a few years B2B will be a landscape dominated by #passivecommerce .. delivered by those who see it coming now. For now, get your ducks in a row.
